The Finer Details

The Emgrand L EM-i will join a growing Geely range that already includes the EX5 electric SUV, EX2 electric hatchback and Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV.

While Geely's Australian success to date has been largely SUV-focused, the Emgrand signals the brand's intention to broaden its reach into more traditional passenger car segments.

VVisitors to Everything Electric Sydney will be able to inspect the sedan ahead of its expected first-half 2027 launch, alongside two new SUV models set to be unveiled on September 18.

Geely has yet to reveal what they are, though one possible candidate is the seven-seat M9 SUV, which carsales previously drove in China and understands is expected to join the Australian line-up in 2027.

Earlier this year, carsales drove a China-spec Emgrand hybrid at Geely's proving ground in Hangzhou and found it to be a surprisingly polished rival to established hybrid sedans.

Although the Australian-market specification remains unconfirmed, the vehicle assessed by carsales paired a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and claimed driving range of up to 1000km.

Geely also touted fuel consumption as low as 2.2L/100km under Chinese testing conditions.

Inside, the Emgrand featured a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, wireless phone charging, six airbags and a suite of advanced driver assistance technologies.

Boot space, cabin quality and ride comfort were among its standout attributes during the brief preview drive.

“It is a great time to be a new car buyer, and the Australian market's interest towards our brand's cars has been very promising,” said Geely Auto Australia Product Planning and Marketing Director Andrew Tuitahi.

“These new cars are being intentionally presented at Everything Electric to diversify our audience offering; we can think of no other place to showcase and celebrate our upcoming models than the Everything Electric Show.”

The confirmation comes only weeks after Geely launched its EX2 electric hatchback and celebrated 20,000 Australian deliveries since beginning local operations in 2025.

The Road Ahead

The Emgrand forms part of a broader Geely product offensive that will see multiple new sedans and SUVs introduced over the next 12 months.

For now, Everything Electric Sydney will provide Australian buyers with their first opportunity to closely inspect the production-bound Emgrand before pricing and final local specifications are announced closer to launch.
