GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Citroen's next C4 Picasso

TECHNOSPACE concept a pointer to Citroen's new-generation C4 Picasso people-mover
Citroen has previewed the replacement for its C4 Picasso people-mover in the form of the TECHNOSPACE concept, which will make its world debut at the Geneva motor show on March 5.
Confirmed for European release in the second half of this year and likely to hit Australian roads by early 2014, the next-generation C4 Picasso five-seater will again be joined by the larger seven-seat C4 Grand Picasso, spy images of which have recently emerged in Europe.
While Citroen’s smallest people-mover – the C3 Picasso – is not sold here, the existing C4 Picasso is currently available in Australia in a single 2.0-litre turbo-diesel automatic variant priced from $37,990, and new Citroen importer Sime Darby will soon reveal its future model plans.
If the TECHNOSPACE show car is any guide, its successor will emit as little as 98g/km of CO2, thanks to a new Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2), which the French maker says “features efficient architecture and minimises weight” and will also underpin sister brand Peugeot’s next 308.
Citroen says the TECHNOSPACE combines class-leading interior space and a 537-litre boot capacity with “previously unseen proportions” in a compact body measuring 4430mm long, 1830mm wide and 1610mm high.
Wrapped in a new bodyshell featuring double-deck headlights and 3D-effect tail-lights, it also features a 12-inch high-definition panoramic touch-screen.
The next Grand Picasso, meantime, appears to feature the same adventurous front-end design, but an extended five-door body that rides on a longer wheelbase.
Both upcoming Picasso models should continue to represent what Citroen does best – large, stylish boxes with revolutionary interiors – but neither model is expected to bring new powertrains.
That means the engine line-up will likely comprise 1.6-litre HDi 90 and HDi 110 turbo-diesels, 2.0-litre HDi 150 turbo-diesel, VTi 120 and VTi 95 petrol fours, the THP 155 turbo-petrol four co-developed with BMW and, at least overseas, the Hybrid4 system from the DS5 and Peugeot 3008.
Globally, Citroen has sold almost three million Picassos since 1999.
