GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Mercedes-AMG GT GT3 - It's official

AMG puts the "3" in its all-new GT sports car

Mercedes-Benz's AMG go-fast division will use the Geneva Motor Show to reveal even more go-fast than usual.

These official sketches show it will pull the covers off the GT3 race version of its all new twin-turbo V8 GT sports car.

It won't be alone in Geneva, with Audi also said to be planning the launch of its own second-generation R8 LMS race car at the show, while BMW showed its new M6-based GT3 racer a couple of weeks ago.

The GT3 will be AMG's second chop at the fiercely fought GT category after its Bathurst 12 Hour-winning SLS GT3 hit the tracks in 2010.

While the sketches indicate a pure track-based racer, it is understood AMG is also working on a road-legal version of the GT3, though it might have to give the naming structure a fiddle.

AMG head, Tobias Moers, told British magazine Autocar that the road version wouldn't be called a GT3, though.

"GT3 belongs to the other company. We will find another name for our car," he said.

That name is most likely to follow recent traditions for AMG's fastest, wildest models and take on the Black Series badge.

The racing car will be ready for customer teams in time for the 2016 FIA GT season and Moers is planning to launch the road version around the same time.

Moers said he is targeting power-to-weight, driveability, feel and a Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time about 10 seconds faster than the GT S for the road car.

He admits it's possible to pull up to 100kg out of the GT S's 1570kg kerb weight, which, in combination with around 410kW of power from the 4.0-litre biturbo V8, would make for a very quick car indeed.
