Volkswagen has premiered its Golf-based, MQB platform T-ROC concept at the Geneva motor show, following the earlier release of sketches and details for its possibly forthcoming sub-Tiguan venture into the Nissan Juke-style SUV segment. Presenting the 4Motion-driven 2.0-litre turbo-diesel two-door crossover on the Volkswagen stand, the company’s head of powertrain development, Dr Heinz Jakob Neusser, said the T-ROC is on the company’s wish list to expand and diversify the company’s SUV range.
"For the past 24 months VW has presented a cavalcade of new SUVs and shown quite a few which are very close to production. We'd like to build the T-ROC, it would be the logical consequence of the Golf format," Dr Neusser said
Response to the concept car at the Geneva motor show will shape the Nissan JUKE rival's future, but the way Volkswagen was talking at its global reveal suggests it could be a done deal.
"The T-ROC is an SUV in the Golf format. The T-ROC is based on the MQB platform, the new modular transverse-mounted platform. It shows a sculptural design, progressive, with a fast roofline that goes into three-dimensional taillights. It shows a progressive future-oriented front design."
The T-ROC follows the CrossBlue (USA), CrossBlue Coupé (China) and Taigun (India) concepts. Although it tones down the striking style penned by Volkswagen’s styling team, the T-ROC is aimed at a different buyer group to the Tiguan with its coupe-style body, 19-inch wheels, two-part removable roof and bold front end incorporating LED headlights.
