German publication announces quality awards
It's unanimous, Germans rate Japanese cars as the most reliable'Auto Bild', a popular German magazine, has rated 24 car manufacturers in order of quality.
These rankings were compiled from an aggregate of owner survey results, recalls, customer complaints, warranties, mystery shopping surveys of dealership servicing and raw data from the Technische Uberwachung Verein (TUV – 'Technical Oversight Association').
For the third consecutive year, Mazda headed the list, ahead of other Japanese manufacturers Toyota, Honda, Suzuki and Nissan. Curiously, Daewoo-as-Chevrolet placed 6th in the survey, higher than German GM brand Opel.
Audi and Mercedes-Benz were the highest-placed German marques, sharing 7th spot with Mitsubishi and Volvo. Hyundai, Opel, Skoda and Smart all level-pegged at 11th position, ahead of BMW at 15th and Volkswagen at 16th. Citroen and Seat occupied 17th position and Ford came in at 19th.
Positions 20 through to 22 were taken by Kia, Alfa Romeo and Renault, respectively.
Fiat and Peugeot fared badly, described in the report as 'tail lights' -- what we in Australia might call tail-enders -- for their equal 23rd rating.
