GM and PSA announce joint models
Peugeot, Citroen and GM reveal the four new models they will co-developGeneral Motors and PSA Peugeot Citroen have revealed the four all-new models they will co-develop from 2016 as part of the cost-saving deal the US and French car-makers announced earlier this year.
The first “common vehicle project” will be a mid-size people-mover that is expected to replace both GM Opel/Vauxhall’s current Zafira (pictured) and Peugeot’s 4007, which is currently based on Mitsubishi’s discontinued Outlander.
Both new models are likely to be produced by PSA in an arrangement that will bolster one of the French firm’s under-utilised plants and GM to close its similarly unprofitable Bochum plant by 2015.
The second jointly developed vehicle will be a small people-mover to be shared by Opel/Vauxhall and Citroen, perhaps in the form of replacements for the Meriva and C3 Picasso. There is also what is described as “an upgraded low-CO2 small car segment platform to feed Opel/Vauxhall’s next-generation of cars in Europe and other regions”.
This could refer to successors for the Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208 and Citroen C3, or the Opel Agila, Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1. However, the 108 and C1 are currently based on and produced alongside Toyota’s Aygo in Europe.
The fourth and final joint-venture platform will underpin “mid-size cars for Opel/Vauxhall and the Peugeot/Citroen brands”, which almost certainly means the next-generation Opel Insignia, Peugeot 508 and Citroen C5 will be fundamentally the same vehicle underneath.
Combined with purchasing and other back-room operating synergies, the joint platform programs are expected to save about $US2 billion annually for both companies within five years.
“All four projects will be developed combining the best platform architectures and technologies from the Alliance partners,” said PSA and GM in a joint statement this week.
“Beyond this, PSA and GM are currently sounding out whether to extend the cooperation potentially to other fields.”
