GM's mid-sized global car leaked?

Patent sketches of the new Chevrolet Malibu provide first glimpse of GM's next generation global mid-sized car

New patent sketches of Chevrolet's next generation Malibu mid-sized car have emerged online, showing how the North American vehicle will be styled.

The new Malibu, due 2012, is believed to be the first production version of GM's new mid-sized global car -- and that has implications for the Australian market. Holden's Epica has been trundling along for some years now, but with competition from the likes of the second generation Mazda6 and Honda Accord Euro, not to mention the Ford Mondeo, an all-new mid sized vehicle wouldn't hurt Holden's stocks in the slightest.

Reports from the US suggest the new Malibu will debut later in 2011 and the images you see here are early patent filings for the new design. It is unclear whether Holden will continue with the Epica nameplate or it will adopt a new name for future mid sized vehicles. The new Malibu outlined in the photo is based on the Epsilon II platform, which underpins European cars such as the Opel Insignia and the upcoming all-new Saab 9-5, plus the Buick Regal in North America and China.
