Homegrown Brabham BT62R supercar dead

Brabham Automotive shuts up shop following split with major shareholder

Australia’s one and only true supercar, the Brabham BT62R, has been axed following a split between Brabham Group Limited and Fusion Capital, along with the entire Brabham Automotive brand as we know it – for now.

Details of the split are few and far between at this stage, but it appears there was a difference of opinion as to the strategic direction of the Adelaide-based low-volume, high-end supercar brand that couldn’t be settled, resulting in the two parties going their separate ways.

Fusion Capital was the majority shareholder and sole funder of the operation and has reportedly retained naming rights to Brabham Automotive.

In a statement issued via the Brabham brand’s social media, Fusion Capital chairman Matt Fitch indicated an assault on the automotive electrification scene could be on the cards.

“Ultimately the strategic direction of both groups did not align – that happens,” he said.

“My family and I have invested in automotive and manufacturing for over 40 years and we will continue to do so with what we have created over the last six years.

“Powertrains are evolving and the opportunity to challenge the mainstream OEMs has never been greater.”

Brabham Group Limited director David Brabham – the youngest son of legendary Australian F1 champion Jack Brabham – described the announcement as “regrettable” but said the end of the automotive license opened “the doors for future business ventures in the motorsport, automotive, and heritage sectors”.

Brabham Automotive formally launched in 2018 with the release of the formidable BT62 track monster and then doubled down in 2020 with the road-going BT62R.

Both versions featured a 5.4-litre V8 that produced 522kW/667Nm and had a 8000rpm redline.

The brand originally planned to build and sell 70 examples of the BT62R, but at the time of writing the official tally remains unknown.
