Honda Australia has announced its entry into a partnership with the Amy Gillett Foundation to help promote safety on Australian roads.
The foundation was formed following the tragic death of champion Australian cyclist and PhD student Amy Gillett in July 2005 when a car crashed into six cyclists on a training ride in Germany. The accident left two other Australian riders in critical condition.
The riders were members of the Australian Institute of Sport women's road squad and were training for the Thueringen Rundfahrt stage race.
The foundation was formed in the same year and aims to reduce the incidence of death and injury caused by the interaction between bike riders and vehicles on the road.
Honda's partnering with the foundation provides a synergy connecting both road safety and the environment. It will begin with next week's Share the Road Tour in NSW, an event also supported by Continental Tyres.
The cycling event will be led by Australian Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rochelle Gilmore who will head up the Honda Dream Team.
"I am looking forward to helping Honda spread the road safety message during next week's tour from Sydney through major regional NSW centres," Ms. Gilmore said.
According to Honda Australia managing director and CEO Mr. Satoshi Matsuzawa, "Honda has strong links with cycling globally. Cycling has strong parallels with our core value of sustainability and we have been searching for the right opportunity to support a cycling organisation with road safety at its heart.
"Honda understands the environmental benefits of bike riding and low-emission vehicles and we look forward to working with the Amy Gillett Foundation to foster a harmonious and respectful relationship between motorists and bike riders," he said.
Amy Gillett Foundation CEO Tracey Gaudry said "Many bicyclists are involved in accidents inadvertently caused by road users who don't pay attention or don't share the road responsibly.
"Honda understands the need to let all road users know that their safety and the safety of others depends on paying strict attention whether driving, riding or walking."
