Subaru of America has unleashed the 2024 Subaru WRX TR at the annual Subiefest in Florida on Saturday, filling the space where the discontinued WRX STI flagship once lived and previewing the WRX 30 Years edition, as it’s expected to be called in Australia.
Resurrecting the TR 'tuner-ready' performance badge that has historically been reserved for special stripped-out variants in the US market, the new Subaru WRX TR comes with a host of mechanical upgrades designed to appeal to its most hard-core fanbase.
That explains why the WRX TR gets a set of stiffer springs and new dampers to improve body control, plus a retuned steering rack claimed to deliver sharper steering response.
Boosting grip, there's also a special set of stickier Bridgestone Potenza S007s that are said to perform better in both wet and dry conditions.
Improving performance further is a new high-performance Brembo brake package that boasts red-painted six-callipers clamping 340mm discs up front and two-piston rear callipers combined with 326mm rotors.
Under the bonnet there's a 2.4-litre turbo-petrol flat-four that produces the same 202kW of power and 350Nm of torque as the standard car, combined with the six-speed manual only and the car-maker's all-wheel drive system with active torque vectoring.
Within the cabin there's a set of black and grey Ultrasuede Recaro seats that come with eight-way electric adjustment.
What's missing is the Australian-spec version’s big rear wing, with the WRX TR getting a small boot lid spoiler instead.
Other TR upgrades include the addition of Subaru's latest EyeSight driver assist features, adding AEB, adaptive cruise and lane keep assist to a manual-equipped WRX for the first time.
Subaru Australia has yet to officially confirm any interest in the WRX TR or whether it will introduce a local equivalent, but ADR documents indicate it will.
In the US, pricing for the 2024 Subaru WRX TR will be announced ahead of its launch in early 2024.
