A BMW Hydrogen 7 is embarked on a road trip covering ranging from Portland Maine to Santa Monica in California. Expected to take 12 days, the trip runs from the state of Maine in the north-east of the United States, to California in the west of the country.
The Hydrogen 7, like the one recently displayed and demonstrated in Australia (more here), will take part in the 'Hydrogen Road Tour', along with other hydrogen-fuelled vehicles from Daimler, GM, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen.
Organisers of the event have scheduled the run to occur between the dates of August 11 to 23 and hope to stir up some political support for the alternative-energy cars along the way. The support they're seeking is a political commitment to establishing hydrogen replenishment infrastructure.
Politicians are invited to see the cars close up and find out about the clean-running hydrogen propulsion systems which emit just water vapour. BMW claims that the discharge from the Hydrogen 7's exhaust is pure enough to drink.
"Being on this tour will show more people that hydrogen is truly the best alternative transportation fuel," says Tom Baloga, BMW's Vice President of Engineering in the US.
"An internal combustion engine, powered by hydrogen should play an important role in the future of sustainable mobility."
The tour still has over a week to run and is being reported live on a website, here. Here's a safety tip from the Carsales Network, when passing through New Jersey, watch out for lightning in Lakehurst.
