As part of its move away from the 'i' naming convention that characterises the i30 and i20 cars, Hyundai has chosen the name Creta for its new sub-compact SUV, which will be sold across most global markets.
Although other details, such as the design, are being kept secret for now, the Korean car-maker did reveal that first deliveries of the Creta – a name inspired by the Greek island of Crete – will take place in India in the second half of 2015.
It therefore stands to reason that the car will be built in India, alongside the i20 that's sold in Australia.
As the first compact SUV developed by Hyundai, the new model will rival vehicles such as the Holden Trax, Mazda CX-3 and Ford EcoSport, and will slot underneath the recently renamed Tuscon (formerly ix35).
It's not clear if the new model will be offered in Australia in the short-term – or even the long-term. Hyundai Australia's public relations general manager Bill Thomas was non-committal on its local arriving.
Thomas confirmed that Hyundai is very keen offer a vehicle in the burgeoning compact SUV segment in Australia, but wouldn't say if this would be the vehicle of choice.
"Yes it's a boom market and we very much want representation there. As for that particular vehicle [Creta] we can't say yet whether we would or wouldn't take it."
Hyundai Australia has already ruled out the ix25 compact SUV — first shown at the 2014 Beijing motor show — for the Australian market.
