Hyundai IONIQ 6 reveal imminent

Battery-electric sedan to formally break cover by the end of the month

Hyundai has confirmed both the exterior and interior designs of its looming 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 6 will be revealed by the end of the month, pointing to a full global debut sometime in the first half of July.

The all-electric sedan was teased for the first time last week via an ambiguous YouTube video championing its simple lines and ‘streamliner’ design, and now it’s been previewed again through the release of some early concept sketches.

Those who have been following the IONIQ 6 story will know it’s the production derivative of the 2020 Hyundai Prophecy EV concept, with that direct lineage on full display in these sketches, especially the lower one.

With the long-awaited reveal now less than a fortnight away, Hyundai says it will be steadily releasing more preview images via its social media channels and the dedicated IONIQ 6 landing page on its website.

“Hyundai Motor will fully unveil both exterior and interior designs of its new electrified streamliner later this month,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

“The streamliner design typology evident in the sketch reflects Hyundai designers’ commitment to satisfy both aesthetic and functional needs of customers in the electric mobility era.”

Underpinned by the same bespoke E-GMP architecture as the award-winning Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6, the IONIQ 6 is expected to arrive Down Under in either the closing stages of 2022 or early 2023 with Hyundai anticipating huge interest and demand for the new model, despite its sedan body type.

In terms of powertrains, the IONIQ 6 will mimic the single and dual-motor configurations of the IONIQ 5, although online chatter has pointed to slightly higher power and torque outputs for the sedan compared to its SUV stablemate, but we won’t have to wait too long for confirmation.

For reference, the single motor IONIQ 5 develops 160kW/350Nm while the dual-motor ups the ante to 225kW/605Nm, resulting in a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds.

It will likely be a similar story when it comes to the effective driving ranges thanks to the IONIQ 6’s slippery shape which will undoubtedly yield a lower drag coefficient – something of a must given its identity as an ‘electrified streamliner’.
