Unofficial renders of a Hyundai IONIQ 6 Shooting Brake have surfaced online in the wake of Hyundai design boss SangYup Lee’s comments talking up the design appeal of a wagon version of the sleek new electric car.
As reported earlier this month, Lee said he “can make a great hatchback out of that” when referring to the new IONIQ 6, adding: “a shooting brake”.
We’re sure Lee has his own renders and drawings under lock and key, if not clay models, so for now we’re relying on the talented graphic artists at Kolesa.ru, who have delivered the goods.
According to the Russian outlet, one of the quintessential design elements of the all-new 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 is the shape of its glasshouse, which largely mirrors the gentle curve of the roofline.
With this in mind, the artist has reduced the arc of the roofline above the rear window and steepened the boot-lid-cum-tailgate to suit.
The upper-rear edge of the window line has also been raised accordingly to maintain the sedan’s pillar thickness while the rear spoiler has been moved from the boot to the top of what’s now the tailgate.
A subtle set of silver roof rails largely completes the wagon makeover, with the finishing touch being the omission of the sedan’s integrated but secondary lip spoiler.
Beyond looking the business, an IONIQ 6 Shooting Brake would provide Hyundai with an in-house zero-emissions alternative to the Genesis G70 Shooting Brake and help carve out even more of a niche for the swoopy electric sedan.
Considering a high-performance Hyundai IONIQ 6 N is also on the agenda, the Shooting Brake could hand the Korean car-maker a tantalising budget alternative to the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo.
Unfortunately, the low-riding five-door Taycan isn’t yet offered in Australia, but we do get the raised Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.
And a crossover version of the IONIQ 6 Shooting Brake would be a neat addition, too…
