Hyundai promises 17 new EVs by 2030
Korean car-maker has big electric vehicle plans for itself and Genesis sub-brandHyundai has announced it will launch no fewer than 17 new battery-electric vehicles globally between now and 2030, consisting of 11 Hyundai-branded models and six from its Genesis luxury brand, as it targets a seven per cent share of all EV sales worldwide by the end of this decade.
Of those six new Genesis models, two of them will be traditional passenger vehicles (sedans, coupes and wagons) and four will be SUVs, two of which – the Genesis GV60 and Genesis Electrified GV70 – are already confirmed for Australia.
The announcement was made today by Hyundai Motor CEO Jaehoon Chang as he detailed the company’s updated electrification roadmap at the annual CEO Investor Day forum.
According to Chang, an all-new integrated modular architecture (IMA) derived from the current e-GMP platform will be rolled out in 2025 in an effort to standardise not only the vehicle underpinnings, but the battery packs and electric motors as well.
Hyundai says the new platform will simplify production, reduce the associated costs, streamline vehicle packaging and shorten charging times thanks to more efficient powertrains.
Supporting the new platform will be a wave of new and updated connectivity and autonomous driving technologies that will be backed by a dedicated 12 billion won ($A13.7b) investment.
“Hyundai is successfully accelerating its transition to electrification and becoming a global leader in EVs despite a challenging business environment caused by the global chip shortage and ongoing pandemic,” Chang said.
“Along with our seamless efforts to improve EV value, Hyundai Motor will continue to secure its business sustainability as a ‘Mobility Solutions Provider’ through advanced technologies of not only hardware but also software.”
To support Hyundai’s mammoth EV aspirations, a dedicated new electric vehicle production facility is being planned, while the company’s recently opened plant in Indonesia will start production of EVs later this year.
