Jaecoo J5 Summit 2026 Review

The 2026 Jaecoo J5 enters one of Australia’s most competitive vehicle segments with an aggressive pricing strategy that’s difficult to ignore. The range opens with the Track at just $25,990 drive away, while the flagship Summit tested here tops out at $29,990 drive away. Again, that’s drive away.

What’s more impressive is what buyers receive for their money. Even in Summit guise, the J5 costs less than many entry-level rivals, yet presents as a significantly more expensive vehicle.

Its upright proportions, flush-fitting technology and generous equipment list help create a strong first impression, while a panoramic glass roof, powered tailgate and leather-appointed interior further reinforce that premium ambition.

The cabin is dominated by a large 13.2-inch portrait-oriented infotainment screen, paired with an 8.8-inch digital instrument display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, while the touchscreen itself feels modern and responsive to use. A 360-degree camera is also fitted and is among the highlights of the package.

The Summit gains heated and ventilated front seats (power adjustment for both front occupants), dual-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, ambient interior lighting and an eight-speaker audio system. On paper, there’s very little missing from the specification sheet, particularly given the asking price.

Powering the Chinese SUV is a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 108kW and 210Nm, driving the front wheels through a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Jaecoo claims combined fuel consumption of 7.5L/100km, though as we’ll discuss later, achieving that figure in the real world is difficult.

Safety equipment is well-specced too, with adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keeping assistance, traffic sign recognition and a driver monitoring system all included as standard. Seven airbags are fitted across the range.

One notable omission, however, is an ANCAP safety rating. At the time of writing, the Jaecoo J5 remains unrated by the independent crash-testing authority, meaning buyers don’t yet have the reassurance of a published crash performance score.

The 2026 Jaecoo J5 Summit’s strongest attribute is its ability to punch above its weight on equipment.

For the money, few rivals offer such a comprehensive equipment list. Elsewhere, features like heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic roof and a powered tailgate are typically reserved for significantly more expensive variants.

The cabin is also practical. There’s useful storage beneath the centre console and several areas to stash everyday items. It feels like a vehicle designed by people who actually use cars, rather than simply trying to maximise screen space.

Visibility is another standout. The upright design and generous glass area make the J5 easy to place on the road, while the excellent and vivid 360-degree camera takes much of the stress out of parking.

More broadly, the J5 simply has a knack for appearing more expensive than it is. From many different angles, it looks like somebody shrunk a Range Rover in the wash, and that’s no bad thing.

The massive portrait touchscreen immediately catches your eye, the panoramic roof brightens up the cabin beautifully and the rear styling is genuinely attractive.

While the drivetrain leaves plenty of room for improvement, the J5 is surprisingly refined at a cruise. Wind and road noise are generally well suppressed on the open road, helping make longer journeys more comfortable than you might expect from a budget-focused SUV.

Ownership credentials are another plus. Jaecoo backs the J5 with an eight-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, placing its coverage among the most generous in the segment and providing some additional peace of mind for buyers considering a newer brand.

Despite its premium aspirations, material quality remains a weak point with the 2026 Jaecoo J5 Summit.

The dashboard design looks modern and expensive, but scratch beneath the surface and the illusion quickly fades. Hard plastics dominate much of the cabin, and many of the touchpoints feel noticeably cheaper than the exterior styling would suggest.

The driving experience is also the J5’s weakest area.

The CVT can feel hesitant and occasionally clunky, particularly when cold, sometimes delivering abrupt responses that feel at odds with the SUV’s otherwise comfort-focused character. It can also allow the engine to flare unnecessarily under acceleration, creating plenty of noise without a corresponding increase in forward momentum.

The issue becomes even more noticeable during cold starts, where the drivetrain can jolt when pulling away from a standstill.

Fuel consumption was another disappointment. Despite an official claim of 7.5L/100km, real-world figures hover around 10.0L/100km during testing, which is excessive for a small front-wheel-drive SUV with relatively modest outputs.

The steering also lacks natural weighting and feedback, feeling unusually heavy at low speeds. The driver assistance systems need further refinement, too, with the active lane keeping sometimes intervening more abruptly than necessary.

While the infotainment screen itself is aesthetically pleasing, its low placement requires drivers to glance too far down and away from the road when following navigation instructions. Glare can also be problematic in bright conditions.

The slim digital instrument display doesn’t help matters, with speed information presented in a surprisingly small font. A head-up display would significantly improve useability.

The lack of any type of spare wheel is an interesting omission. Instead, Jaecoo provides a tyre repair kit despite there being an existing storage cavity beneath the boot floor. Given the available space, it feels like a missed opportunity.

The 2026 Jaecoo J5 Summit is a bit of a mixed bag, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

For less than $30,000 drive away it packs an enormous amount of equipment and enough technology to make some considerably more expensive rivals look stingy.

It’s also practical, easy to see out of and backed by an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty. While Jaecoo is still establishing itself in Australia and aftersales support remains a work in progress, that warranty should go a long way towards instilling confidence.

Unfortunately, the driving experience doesn’t quite match the generous specification sheet and fuel consumption is higher than expected. The cabin materials also fall short of the premium image suggested by the exterior styling.

Still, it’s important to remember what the J5 is trying to be. This is a family-focused small SUV that aims to deliver as much equipment and showroom appeal as possible for the price. Viewed through that lens, it’s hard not to see the Jaecoo J5 Summit’s appeal.

Just go in with realistic expectations, and you probably won’t be disappointed.
