Jaguar readying J-PACE to battle Porsche Cayenne

Jaguar has filed a global trademark for the 'J-PACE' name it will use on an all-new full-size SUV it's creating to steal sales from Porsche's Cayenne.

Set to arrive on 2021, the big new Jaguar SUV is set to borrow much from Land Rover's Range Rover to keep costs down.

According to Brit mag Autocar, which broke the trademark story late last night, says that despite the connection with the Range Rover, the J-PACE will have a clear on-road bias.

It's not the first time a large J-PACE was considered. Back in 2015 a large flagship SUV was rumoured to be on the cards from Jaguar, but was thought to have been shelved to pave the way for the launch of the F-PACE, E-PACE and forthcoming I-PACE.

Now, with those vehicles released and sales of SUVs showing no signs of slowing, Jaguar can no longer resist the temptation of a higher-profit large SUV.

Instead of aiming for outright sportiness, the Brit mag suggests the J-PACE will target levels of luxury equivalent to the XJ limousine.

Likely to be based on an all-aluminium Range Rover architecture, the J-PACE will come equipped with the same engines and plug-in hybrid powertrains offered on the large luxury Land Rover.

This is likely to include the Range Rover's latest 297kW/640Nm plug-in hybrid system, which blends a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder engine with an 85kW electric motor. The result is a large SUV that can hit 100km/h in less than seven seconds, a 50km pure-electric range and claimed average fuel consumption of just 2.8L/100km.
