These are the best shots yet of Jaguar's new XJ flagship.
Caught heavily camouflaged undergoing cold weather testing by the spymeisters at Carparazzi, the shots nonetheless show the company is continuing the styling theme started with the XF. But according to insider information the new XJ is expected to push the boundaries even further as it faces off against increased competition from the likes of Porsche and Aston Martin in the high-end four-door 'coupe' market.
Now under control of Indian giant Tata, Jaguar is forging ahead with the plans begun under the old Ford regime to ditch the retro look in favour of contemporary design. Ian Callum, Jaguar's chief of design, says because the XJ will sell in lower volumes than the XF there is more freedom for the design team to push the envelope.
Despite the heavy cladding, there are several new features visible on the prototype. A striking and large new grille is the most dramatic change at the front and the traditional four round headlights are expected to make way for new versions similar to the XF.
The boot line also appears to be much shorter than the current car lending weight to the move towards a four-door 'coupe' shape.
Underneath, the new XJ is based on the existing aluminium platform but with extensive modifications.
No word yet on the engine line-up but don't be surprised if it consists of upgraded versions of the current V6 and V8 units.
The new XJ is expected to go on sale in the middle of 2011 and should debut at the Paris Show in 2010.
