Japan reconsiders sportscars
Toyota to end sports car domestic salesToyota Motors says it will discontinue production of its MR-S in July next year in a move to end domestic sales of sports cars.
Toyota made the decision in the face of the sluggish domestic market for sports cars which prompted the biggest Japanese automaker to stop manufacturing the Toyota Celica in April.
Among other Japanese carmakers, Honda Motors has pulled the plug on production of its Integra sports car.
The MR-S, a two-seater, midship-engine convertible, aroused strong demand especially among young people when it was released in 1999, with sales reaching 1710 units in November the same year.
Recently, however, monthly sales average around 110 units.
Before ending the output of the MR-S, Toyota will offer 1000 units of its special edition under the name of 'V Edition Final Version' from next January 9. The special edition will be priced at 2.32 million or 2.40 million yen depending on its transmission systems.
Toyota will continue producing the SC sports car of the Lexus luxury brand.
