Jeep has introduced a value-packed limited edition model based on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the company's use of the name 'Rubicon'.
In keeping with the rugged, go-anywhere nature of the standard Wrangler Rubicon, the new model builds on that reputation with higher ground clearance and new 'rock rails'. As a concession to comfort, however, the 10th anniversary edition comes with 'Anniversary Red' leather trim.
Jeep is offering the limited edition model in two-door and four-door ('Unlimited') body styles. For the Australian market Jeep has secured a batch of 30, comprising 12 of the short-wheelbase models and 18 of the Wrangler Unlimited long-wheelbase models.
“The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition is a tribute to 10 years of Wrangler Rubicon history,” said Veronica Johns, President and CEO of Fiat Chrysler Group Australia.
“To celebrate the anniversary, Jeep has created a stunning new example of the Wrangler, available with key standard off-road equipment seen for the first time on a production vehicle.
“The Wrangler Rubicon has been designed for the Jeep brand’s most passionate enthusiasts and we expect this exclusive expression of the nameplate to be keenly sought after, as it offers an unprecedented level of capability straight from the showroom floor.”
The Rubicon name – taken from an infamous four-wheel drive trail in California – was adopted by Jeep for the ultimate Wrangler in 2003. Jeep promoted the new variant for its 'trail-rated' off-road ability without any aftermarket equipment. Initially only the SWB Wranglers were offered with Rubicon variants, but two years later the Wrangler Unlimited also embraced the name.
For the 10th anniversary, the limited-edition models offer a choice of six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions matched to the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, which develops 209kW and 347Nm. Dana diff ratios are 4.1:1 and can be locked electronically. The transfer case provides a low-range ratio of 4.0:1 and a front anti-roll bar disconnect feature aids wheel articulation in tougher off-road environments.
Added to all that, the 10th Anniversary Edition rides approximately 10mm higher on 17-inch alloy wheels finished in a combination of satin black and polished spokes. The commemorative Wrangler can be identified by these and exclusive badging outside, with embroidered legend on the red leather seats inside. Two colours are available: White or Anvil (pictured).
The steering wheel is bound in leather with red stitching that is also evident on the centre console. Finished in 'Quick Silver', the passenger grab handle features a stamped legend that reads: 'Rubicon 10th Anniversary'. Quick Silver is also applied to the air vent bezels, steering wheel spokes and interior door handles.
A cluster of gauges is unique to the limited-edition model and incorporates oil pressure, oil temperature and tyre pressure dials. Other standard features include Mopar 'slush mats', switches for the diff locks/ARB disconnect, and a plaque displaying the vehicle's technical specs.
Pricing is $49,000 for the SWB model, or $53,000 for the Wrangler Unlimited version, with the automatic transmission adding $2000 to both.
