Honda has released a teaser sketch of its next-gen hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, a concept set for debut later this month at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Simply dubbed FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) Concept, the show car represents little more than a “potential styling direction” for the follow-up to the five year-old FCX Clarity. The new car is mooted for production in 2015. Honda is keeping quiet on details of the car until its November 20 reveal. It’s been working openly on semi retail-ready hydrogen fuel-cell product since the turn of the century, serving up its first FCX model for fleet customers in 2002. By 2005 it had expanded this limited release program to private retail buyers.
In 2008 it released the FCX Clarity, winner of World Green Car of the Year 2009. The hydrogen fuel-cell represents a holy grail for the sustainable mobility industry: zero emissions, zero range anxiety. Besides the hefty early-life production costs, the major hindrances to its acceptance lie in difficulties storing and distributing the volatile gas. In July, Honda and GM announced a joint project to work in fuel cell, hydrogen storage and distribution infrastructure systems, with the aim of going to market by 2020.
