Lexus UX 300e trademark name points at electric SUV

Japanese car-maker caught submitting patent for Lexus UX 300e name, likely to be brand's first pure-electric vehicle

Lexus has submitted a patent to protect the Lexus UX 300e name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office it has been revealed.

According to

, the trademark application previews a pure-electric version of the Lexus UX SUV, with a concept for the small zero-emission UX300e tipped to make its debut at either the 2019 Geneva motor show in March, or the Frankfurt motor show later in the year.

If true, the Lexus UX300e will be the car-maker's first ever battery-powered vehicle when the production version is expected to follow in 2020.

Last year at the Detroit motor show, the Toyota-owned premium brand revealed its LF-1 Limitless concept and confirmed that the small crossover concept had been designed to be available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure-electric powertrain.

It's now thought the LF-1 may have been used to gauge public perception for a small battery-powered UX.

Set to become the flagship in the UX range, the UX 300e will sit above the UX 250h in range.

Almost certain to come with all-wheel drive, the car-maker's first pure-electric SUV should be significantly quicker than the 131kW hybrid version and come with a range of around 400-500km.

When the UX 300e eventually arrives, expect it to also come with a significant price hike over the $61,450 Lexus charges for its most expensive UX 250h F Sport.
