Lotus takes up smoking to celebrate 70 years

Small British sports-car maker lays down rubber to mark its seventh decade in existence

Lotus has released a new video that marks the manufacturer's 70th birthday, both figuratively and literally.

Recorded at the car maker's famous Hethel test track, near Norfolk in the UK, the short video shows some of its models drifting gracefully around the circuit.

According to Lotus, the short film was created "without the use of CGI" and only required professional drivers and "lots of tyres".

For the smoky tribute, the now Geely-owned car maker used both The Exige and Evora 410 Sport to 'paint' the 70th logo on the firm's skidpan.

The two men picked for the commemorative shredding of tyres is Lotus' head of attributes, Gavan Kershaw, and vehicle dynamics engineer, Daniel Peck.

Said to have taken a day to complete, the stunt celebrates the passage of 70 years since 1948, when Lotus' founder, Colin Chapman, established the Lotus brand in a small London lock-up garage.
