Mazda to feature go-figure outrigger at Sydney show
Rear-drive rotary concept to make its first visit down south at Sydney motor showMazda's intriguingly styled Taiki concept car, complete with its outrigger rear wheels, will make its first visit to the southern hemisphere when it appears at the Sydney International Motor Show from October 9.
The trimaran-style Taiki is the fourth in Mazda's series of Nagare concept cars, and is described by the company as “Expressing one possible direction for a future Mazda sports car with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, and is powered by a next-generation rotary engine.”
The rear-wheel arrangement doesn't appear to have any practical application but despite appearances, the design is claimed by Mazda to be surprisingly aerodynamic.
"Starting with the debut of the Mazda Nagare in Los Angeles in late 2006, the process of moving from west to east around the globe towards the unveiling of the Mazda Taiki in Tokyo was a journey of personal discovery for Mazda design," said Mazda design chief Lauren Van Den Acker.
"Still, it does not mean that we arrived at any specific goal. On the contrary, it marks a new beginning in the ongoing evolution of Mazda design."
Mazda has done nicely with its Nagare concept series, taking out the Grand Prix Du Design award for excellence in creativity and design earlier in the year.
The Taiki's predecessors include the Nagare, Ryuga and Hakaze (which came to the Melbourne International Motor Show in February this year) concept cars.
