Mazda3 goes up in price – again
Japanese brand bumps up Mazda3 prices for the third time in nine monthsThe 2022 Mazda3 is now even more expensive following a range-wide $500 price increase, pushing the starting figure up to $27,040 plus on-road costs.
It’s the third price hike in the past nine months for the Mazda3, which was once Australia’s top-selling new model but took a dramatic and unapologetic step upmarket three years ago.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 hatch and sedan arrived in Australia in April 2019 with a $4500 price increase at base level, bringing its starting price to $24,990 plus ORCs and making it one of the pricier offerings within the mainstream small-car segment.
A subsequent model update in November 2021, when the Mazda3 was named carsales’ Best Small Car for 2021, increased the admission price to $26,340, which became $26,540 in May 2022.
The Mazda3’s new $27K-plus starting price is considerably higher than that of direct rivals including the Hyundai i30 ($23,720), Kia Cerato ($25,990) and Toyota Corolla ($23,895), with only the all-wheel drive Subaru Impreza ($27,290) being more expensive, excluding Euro small cars like the Skoda Scala and Volkswagen Golf.
No justification for the increase has been given as yet – carsales has contacted Mazda Australia for comment – but chances are it will be related to the higher manufacturing and shipping costs currently being faced by most manufacturers.
So it remains to be seen whether Mazda3 buyers will be getting anything extra for their money, which now amounts to almost $31,000 drive-away for most buyers at base level.
