McLaren has pulled the drapes off the supercar-based racer that it has created for GT3 racing.
Based on the current 720S, the new 720S GT3 race car will be ready to race for the 2019 season, says the car maker's customer racing division, with prototypes already covering more than 30,000km in testing.
To ensure it's ready for competition next year, McLaren says the 720S GT3 racer will continue to be extensively tested across Europe, the US and the Middle East before handing it over to its customer teams.
Like the road car it's based on, the GT3 racer is built around the 720S MonoCage II carbon-fibre tub and comes powered by exactly the same M840T twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8.
Designed and developed within a dedicated facility at McLaren Automotive's Woking HQ, the team tasked with creating the GT3 version of the 720S have concentrated on increasing both the racer's speed and stability to ensure the track-bred race car's performance is accessible for drivers of all abilities.
This included not only improving the 720S on-track balance but tweaking the GT3's handling to make it more predictable on the limit, catering to the large number of amateur racers who compete in the GT3 category.
The 720S GT3 is also claimed to be cheaper to run than the previous 650S GT3 car. McLaren says it has 'optimised' both fuel and tyre management and made it more durable, reliable and easier to service by the team.
Set to make its debut in 2019, McLaren says the 720S GT3 race car will be priced from £440,000 (A$770,000 + taxes).
