Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance here by mid-year

The formidable new 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is only a few months away from entering Aussie showrooms, following confirmation from Mercedes-Benz’s local division that the rabid electrified four-door will touch down here in the second quarter of this year.

Originally expected to arrive Down Under in the second half of last year, the GT 63 S E Performance’s local homologation data has just been posted to the federal government’s ADR approvals database, but we’re still yet to see Aussie pricing for the most powerful production Mercedes model to date.

AMG’s local executives said – back at the car’s 2021 debut – that relevant market details would be revealed in the lead-up to the model’s local introduction, so with a revised Q2 2023 launch date now locked in it should only be a matter of time before we learn how much punters will be paying for the savage new German performance sedan.

Needless to say it will be well over $360,000, given the previous standard Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-Door Coupe was last sold at $363,576 plus on-road costs.

Odds are the 2023 AMG GT 63 S E Performance will start from more than $400,000 on the basis of its 620kW/1400Nm outputs, the resulting 2.9-second 0-100km/h time and plug-in hybrid powertrain that gifts it a short 12km of all-electric driving range.

The monstrous figures come courtesy of a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 (470kW/900Nm) and a 150kW electric motor, the latter of which is fed by a 6.1kWh lithium-ion battery – hence the modest electric driving range.

A nine-speed automatic transmission sends drive to all four wheels with the help of a limited-slip rear differential.

While the battery-powered Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ limousine and EQE 53 sedan were the first EVs to arrive in Australia from Mercedes-AMG, the GT 63 S E Performance was actually the first plug-in model to appear from the German hot shop, back in 2021.

It will also be the first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model to be offered by AMG globally, including in Australia, followed in July by the its answer to the BMW M3, the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance sports sedan.
