As part of an agreement with the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Mercedes-Benz has co-developed engines and other powertrain items. This has seen small turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel engines from the Renault stable used in Mercedes MFA-platform models including the Mercedes-Benz A and B-Class.
Mercedes-Benz and Renault-Nissan co-developed the 1.3-litre M282 turbo-petrol four which was used in a number of models including the W177 series Mercedes-Benz A 180.
Mercedes-Benz also source its 1.5-litre OM608 turbo-diesel from Renault. This engine was used in the W177 Mercedes-Benz A 160d and A 180d, neither of which were sold in Australia.
Cars from premium brands tend to be more expensive to maintain than mainstream models. You are likely to pay more to service a Mercedes-Benz A-Class than a Toyota Corolla.
Comparing apples with apples, however, a Mercedes-Benz A 180 will not be significantly different in cost to run than its BMW or Audi counterpart.
Many premium brands, Mercedes-Benz included, offer fixed price or inclusive servicing programs as part of new car sales.
When it comes to Mercedes-Benz – even its smallest passenger car, the A-Class -- typically the bigger the number, the better the car.
While the number these days doesn’t directly correspond to engine capacity, it is an indicator of both performance and standard equipment levels. If you can afford the extra dollars, the A 200 will deliver more performance and more equipment than the A 180.
The current Mercedes-Benz A-Class five-door hatch (W177) and four-door sedan (V177) are sold in A 180, A200 and A 250 variants. Mercedes-AMG also offers the Mercedes-AMG A 35 in both hatch and sedan and the Mercedes-AMG A 45S in hatch only.
The current W177 series Mercedes-Benz A-Class is built in a number of locations around the world, in most cases sharing production lines with associated models include the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, and Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class.
Australian W177 series Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatches are sourced from the Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary plant in Kecskemét in Hungary. Aussie A-Class sedans along with CLA-Class models are sourced from the Mercedes Benz Werk plant in Rastatt in Germany.
Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class models sold in Australia are built at COMPAS in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
A-Class models for other markets are also built in China, Finland and assembled in Thailand.
The latest W177 series Mercedes-Benz A-Class is the fourth generation of Mercedes-Benz smallest passenger car range. It is offered in both five-door hatch (W177) and four-door sedan (V177) body styles and shares its architecture with the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and is closely related to the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class SUV models.
Both the Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatch and sedan offer competitive interior space for their segments, but you’d be hard pressed to recommend them as a car for anything but single child families. The above-mentioned Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class SUV would be a more appropriate choice from the German company’s line-up
