MG Cyberster set to be Australia’s quickest EV
MG says incoming Cyberster roadster can do 0-100km/h in 2.6sec, outpacing Porsche Taycan Turbo SThe 2024 MG Cyberster electric roadster will deliver supercar-rivalling performance when it arrives in Australia next year, with an engineer for the Chinese auto giant confirming rumours of an astonishing 2.6-second 0-100km/h sprint.
If that becomes the manufacturer’s official claim, the flagship dual-motor version of the MG Cyberster – which will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK next week – would overtake the quickest EV available in Australia, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S (2.8sec).
There are quicker series-production EVs available on the world stage, such as the Rimac Nevera (1.9sec), but the Porsche Taycan Turbo S currently has bragging rights Down Under.
There is a slew of other EVs with sub-4.0sec times under their belt – Porsche Taycan Turbo (3.2sec), Tesla Model 3 Performance (3.3sec), Audi RS e-tron GT (3.3sec), to name just three.
However, Wang Jian, the chief engineer for the electric driveline of the new MG4, which will be topped by the dual-motor MG4 X-POWER (another Goodwood debutante that will arrive here later this year and can reach 100km/h in a claimed 3.8sec), has told carsales that the Cyberster is capable of 2.6sec.
“[Cyberster] is amazing. It’s amazing,” he said.
“I tested it on the proving ground. It’s crazy; it’s less than three seconds – 2.6 – it’s done; it’s very, very crazy.
“[The] colour of sky also will be changing. Not blue, it will be changing to green,” he said playfully of the Cyberster’s sickeningly brutal pace.
The Cyberster will be offered in global markets with both single-motor/rear-drive and full-fat dual-motor/AWD layouts.
Specifications are still to be released, but the twin-motor powertrain is set to produce around 400kW combined.
Jian also promised excellent dynamic performance from the Cyberster, not simply monster straight-line speed, enthusing “no wheel [spin] and chassis control is [great]”.
The Cyberster is expected to arrive in Australia during 2024, priced from more than $100,000.
Just as Kia has thrown down the gauntlet with its circa-$100K EV6 GT (0-100km/h in 3.5sec), MG will certainly test the strength of the modern-era MG brand with the Cyberster.
