The Finer Details

BYD might be taking up the most floorspace in the event’s history, but MG has countered its Chinese rival by unveiling a pair of concepts that preview its future design language.

The GO! is an aggressively cute battery-electric hatchback said to preview a production model due next year, blending retro-inspired styling cues from classic MG models like the MGB GT and MG Metro Turbo, albeit with a modern low-slung twist.

Riding on big wheels wrapped in low profile rubber, the little EV sports flush exterior door handles, chunky body cladding with plenty of air intakes to boost aero efficiency, and tiny side mirrors.

“With MG GO!, we wanted to create something compact and contemporary, but also warm, expressive and immediately likeable, an embodiment of all that we admire about the MG brand,” MG design boss Carl Gotham said.

The MG Cyber Concept high-performance SUV meantime – for which a production date hasn’t been confirmed – previews a large D-segment SUV which will arrive as the brand’s flagship model in the coming years.

MG says the performance-focused SUV draws inspiration from the EX181 land speed record car while combining sports car dynamics and the practicality of a family SUV.

Featuring sharp proportions and a long swooping bonnet, MG vice president of global design Jozef Kaban said the concepts represent the future identity of the brand rather than simply showcasing new tech.

“Great design begins with people, not products. Technology and innovation are essential, but they can be shared. Character cannot,” he said.

The Road Ahead

MG's Goodwood appearance also includes the Future Motion Show, where the company's latest advancements in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving systems and connected vehicle technology using robots, sensors, cameras and LiDAR, is on display.

Also at the show is a lineup of six electrified models, including the new S9 PHEV seven-seat SUV, MG4 EV Urban, HS Plug-in Hybrid, ZS Hybrid+, IM5 and the Cyberster electric roadster.

The S9 PHEV, S6 EV and Cyberster will take on the famous Festival of Speed hill climb.
