Mid-spec 2025 Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R slots into range

New variant to bridge the gap between the current GLX+ and GLS

UPDATE 01/10/2024: Mitsubishi Australia has announced a $56,740 plus on-roads starting price for its box-fresh Triton GLX-R and used the newcomer to introduce tailgate assist to its new-generation pick-up.

As expected, the GLX-R's starting price perfectly splits the existing GLX+ and GLS which sees it slot into the Triton range as the third-from-the-top offering, paring a cloth interior with the SuperSelect II 4x4 system and the flagship GSR's black exterior styling cues.

It'll also be the first variant to offer tailgate assist, a feature destined for the GLS and GSR in the coming weeks as part of the 'MY24.5' rollout.

ORIGINAL: The 2025 Mitsubishi Triton line-up now boasts a new member following the introduction of a GLX-R version as part of the mid-year MY24 revisions.

According to a Queensland-based dealer, who announced the new model, the new version of the popular ute is based on the Triton GLX+ 4x4 dual-cab ute.

Adding GSR-style black 18-inch alloy wheels, a matching black sports bar, new carpet flooring, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and the firm's traction-boosting Super Select II four-wheel drive system, the new GLX-R come with a catch for those who use their ute for work or off-road.

What's missing is the GLX-R doesn't get the GLX+ side steps and comes with the standard rear suspension in place of the GLX+ heavy duty set-up. The new trim also sees the medium-size ute ride on highway terrain Maxxis tyres.

The latest generation Triton was launched in Australian in February 2024 and has since had its driver monitoring system retuned and sub-one tonne models added.

Under the bonnet the standard Triton's 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder turbo-diesel carries over in the GLX-R and is combined with a six-speed automatic and still produces 150kW and 470Nm of torque. A six-speed manual is not an option.

Pricing for the new Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R has yet to be officially confirmed but it's thought to sit between the GLX+ ($53,290) and the up-spec GLS that's priced from $59,090.

Exact timings for the new GLX-R trim will be released later but it arrives ahead of a whole raft of new Triton models that will include both single- and club-cab body styles, as well as the missing manual transmission.

All Mitsubishi Tritons are backed by a 10-year 200,000km warranty if you service it using authorised dealers.
