More performance for Range Rover

Land Rover's large, luxury SUVs updated for 2015
A new model year update for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport has delivered the prestige SUVs improved performance and refinement.
Variants powered by the diesel SDV8 – now with torque peaking 40Nm higher – or the petrol SCV6 now come with a revised version of the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission to handle the additional output with enhanced durability.
The update for the 250kW diesel V8 is limited to what Land Rover calls "detailed calibration changes" that have not only beefed up peak torque by 40Nm to a maximum of 740Nm, but also flattened out the torque curve between 1700 and 3300rpm. Land Rover claims that in-gear acceleration for overtaking is improved by 6.5 per cent using fifth gear up to eight gear. It's also a gain for towing, according to the manufacturer.
Bolted to the engine is the ZF 8HP70 transmission, which features a new torque converter that incorporates a twin-spring damper. Fuel economy and CO2 stats are unchanged from the previous model.
Vehicles powered by the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 continue to boast 250kW and 450Nm output, but the ZF box is a lighter eight-speed automatic (ZF 8HP45). Land Rover advises that this transmission is 6kg lighter and aids the car's fuel efficiency – which is an important point with new European emissions requirements pending.
In other changes to the Range Rover and RR Sport models, exit lights (AKA puddle lamps) project each model's silhouette on the ground at night. 2015 models gain an intelligent cargo mode that adjusts front seats forward if there's insufficient room between them and the rear seats folded flat. Once the rear seats are flat the system automatically adjusts the front seats back again, as far as possible.
New colours comprise Aruba Silver and Kaikoura Stone (N/A Range Rover Sport). Roof and door sills for the Range Rover Sport can be ordered in black or body colour.
Fixed panoramic roofs with electrically-driven blinds are offered for the first time and a new style of 19-inch alloy wheel – in a satin dark grey finish – provides an alternative for buyers wanting higher profile tyres for rougher terrain. Conversely, a new 22-inch alloy is also available as an option for long-wheelbase models.
Australian customers can order the Range Rover Autobiography Black on a long-wheelbase platform. The car's exterior is trimmed in Santorini Black and Bright Chrome, with LED tail lamps and unique 21- or 22-inch alloys complementing the design.
Inside, this variant features a new Lunar/Cirrus colour combination with additional (semi-aniline) leather trim, configurable mood lighting and an 'Executive Class' package. This comprises fully adjustable individual seats, a revised extended centre console incorporating electrically deployed leather-trimmed work tables with integrated USB charging sockets, storage and lighting. Should the buyer choose, the tables can be ordered in different styles of woodgrain veneer, rather than leather. The console also features a cooler compartment and bottle chiller.
"As the world's best luxury and premium sporting SUVs, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport have long offered an unrivalled combination of performance, luxury and off-road capability," says Phil Popham, Group Marketing Director, Jaguar Land Rover.
"These latest updates ensure both vehicles maintain their market-leading positions, with a special focus on performance, efficiency and increased personalisation options."
The new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are available to order through Australian Land Rover dealers from today (July 16).
