More than 15,000 Hyundai Venue vehicles recalled

Second Hyundai model affected by potentially dangerous seat belt pre-tensioner problem

Another popular Hyundai model has been affected by a seat belt problem that could lead to fracturing of pre-tensioner inflators when deployed, potentially propelling metal fragments towards vehicle occupants.

In August, the South Korean car-maker recalled 5211 examples of the 2020-2022 Hyundai i30 Sedan, while the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe was also recalled mid-year due to the same issue, although only 34 examples of the large SUV were involved.

Now, more than 15,000 Hyundai Venue compact SUVs have been called back to fix the same problem, including all variants of the original (QX-series) compact SUV produced between July 18, 2019 and June 20, 2022.

A total of 15,080 Hyundai Venue vehicles are affected by the recall (check the VIN list below to see if your car is affected), which Hyundai says is due to a manufacturing issue.

“If the seat belt pre-tensioner inflator fractures, metal fragments may be propelled at high speed towards the vehicle occupants and could cause serious injury,” said Hyundai in its latest safety notice.

The manufacturer says it will contact owners of affected vehicles in writing to organise inspection of the inflator and free replacement where required.

As with other models affected by the problem, Hyundai says there have been no accidents, incidents or injuries related to this issue with the Venue in Australia.

And unlike the deadly Takata airbag recall, carsales understands that the injuries that have occurred in other countries as a result of the seat belt pre-tensioner problem have been relatively minor.

It’s not yet clear if other Hyundai Group vehicles are affected by the fault, or whether the recall will be extended to related models from the Korean car-maker’s Kia sister brand.

A spokesperson from Kia Australia told carsales the brand hadn’t “received any advice of an impending recall regarding this issue”.
