New BMW X3 brings price rise

Updated BMW X3 gets new look, new diesel tech, and more features but now costs more

The new 2014 BMW X3 comes with more standard features and the German brand’s latest 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, but sees price increases of between $755 and $1900 depending on models.

Full pricing is as follows, with previous prices in brackets, followed by the difference:

X3 xDrive 20i $60,900 ($59,000) +$1900
X3 xDrive 20d $64,400 ($63,100) +$1300
X3 xDrive 28i $73,400 ($72,645) +$755
X3 xDrive 30d $77,400 ($76,500) +$900

The only model in the updated 2014 BMW X3 range to get a new engine is the xDrive 20d model, which features the German company’s new generation 2.0-litre turbo-diesel powerplant.
Pumping out 140kW/400Nm, the new engine is more powerful and is arguably one of the most refined diesel engines in its class – check out our 2014 BMW X3 launch review for proof.

Fuel economy in the 20d model is also a talking point, using just 5.2L/100km and emitting 138 grams of CO2 per km.

All models in the range benefit from tweaks to the eight-speed automatic transmission.

Together with the turbo-petrol xDrive 20i, which is powered by a 135kW/270Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder that drinks fuel at a rate of 7.2L/100km, the entry-level models’ price rise is ameliorated via  more standard features, including xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a new xLine styling package, and improved smart phone connectivity.

BMW Group Australia‘s general manager of marketing, Toni Andreevski, said the new model represents improved value for customers.

"These additional styling upgrades complement the vehicle’s dynamic on- and off-road capability, and the increased value – up to $6,000 of extra standard equipment in some models – makes the X3 a more attractive proposition than ever before," he said.

All models in the new X3 range also come equipped with BMW’s ConnectedDrive system, which makes use of a SIM card to offer online functionality and in-car app features to provide "unrivalled connectivity" according to BMW.

The xDrive 28i model is powered by a tuned version of the 20i’s 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with more mumbo, worth 180kW/350Nm. It sprints from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds and uses 7.3L/100km, a slight improvement on its predecessor.

Sitting at the top of the tree as the most expensive model is the X30d, powered by a 190kW/560Nm version of BMW’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. It drinks fuel at a rate of 5.9L/100km, an improvement of 100ml over its predecessor.

BMW is also offering the BMW with full LED headlights, a range of alloy wheel designs, four new exterior colours and new high-gloss black accents in the cabin. Black, brown and white leather upholstery is available as part of the long list of optional extras.

Sales of the BMW X3 for the first three months of 2014 were down by 22.3 per cent, dropping from the most popular vehicle in the medium luxury SUV segment this time last year to the third best-selling, behind the Audi Q5 and Range Rover Evoque this year.
