Ford engineers would like you to think the new-generation 2022 Ford Ranger is a bulletproof truck – but at the very least it arrives with predictions of bulletproof resale values.
The Toyota HiLux may have a reputation for excellent residual values – built off a reputation for ruggedness and durability – but the new Ford Ranger is set to trounce it on the used car market, according to analysis by valuations giant RedBook.
The new Ranger – which brings passenger car-like tech and connectivity while retaining the rugged capability expected of a ute – is forecast to retain up to 66 per cent of its value after five years of ownership and 80,000km.
That makes it the best new ute currently on sale for forecast resale.
After five years and 80,000km the flagship Ford Ranger Wildtrak V6 is forecast to retain 66 per cent of its original cost, which at launch is $70,190 plus on-road costs.
The twin-turbo four-cylinder models are also predicted to hold 66 per cent of their original value, according to RedBook.
The XLT and Sport dual-cabs are slightly worse off, but still strong at 65 per cent – with both engine variants holding the same forecast.
Ford Australia president and CEO Andrew Birkic said residual values were a key consideration in developing the new Ranger.
“For us it really is a cost of ownership story as well,” he said.
The general manager of RedBook.com.au, Ross Booth, said resale value is all about creating a vehicle that will be appealing to used car buyers in years to come.
“With utes it’s very much about the latest and greatest that people want – and the Ranger delivers,” he said.
“They’re clearly aiming it not at the fleet market but at the passenger market.”
That part is key, according to Booth.
He said the fresh tech injection, increased focus on safety and bolder design means “it blows everything out of the water” when it comes to resale forecasts.
“We see it as a very strong consumer-focused vehicle that people want – and that should drive future resale values,” he said.
“The Ranger is continuing to deliver on moving it from a fleet or business vehicle into that crossover that you can use as a family car on the weekend.”
He says Ford has been chipping away at its residual values, something that is paying off.
And while it doesn’t have the reliability reputation of Toyota, the Ranger now has a muscly V6 engine and more bang for buck in terms of features.
All of which adds up to a big deal for buyers – especially buyers with an ABN – considering depreciation is typically the single biggest cost of owning a new vehicle (with the exception of the last couple of years, which has seen used car values increase).
