PARIS MOTOR SHOW: BMW to launch Range Rover Evoque rival
X2 to blend small coupe with SUV, share new platform next-gen MINI Countryman and steal sales from the small Range RoverBMW will show off a new X2 coupe SUV concept at next month's Paris motor show, according to new reports.
The concept that will be revealed late September at the French car show is claimed to be near production-ready, and will preview the new X2 that will be on sale towards the end of 2017, says Autocar.
Based on BMW's UKL platform, the launch of the new X2 will mark the sixth SUV to join the BMW range.
Co-developed alongside the second-generation MINI Countryman that is also expected to be unveiled in Paris, the pair will share BMW's all-new B48 range of modular three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
Speaking to BMW insiders Autocar says that when it goes on sale the X2 will be priced closely to the Range Rover Evoque in an effort to steal sales from the popular Brit.
Created to also appeal to buyers in the market for a hot hatch but drawn to the higher driving position, the X2 will also be far more engaging to drive compared with the regular X1, says the BMW source.
It will also have "more adventurous" styling compared to the X1, introducing striking styling in an effort to help buyers differentiate it from its more sensible X1 sibling.
Already spotted testing last year, it's not known whether the new SUV will also be offered in a front-wheel drive version, but all will be revealed at the Paris motor show.
Expect a tease in the next few weeks of the X2 before its official unveiling.
