Peugeot adds seven-seater
5008 fills space left by retiring 4007It is a ‘wagon’ based on a people-mover that is headed to Australia to replace an SUV. Meet the Peugeot 5008 that launches in Australia in April 2013.
Arriving soon after the Mitsubishi Outlander-based 4007 is discontinued, the 5+2 seater 5008 will be sold in one specification, priced under $40,000 and offering just one drivetrain choice. Sales ambitions are a modest 20-30 per month for the 5008, which will be priced between the 308 and 508 Touring models.
Peugeot Automobiles Australia general manager/director Bill Gillespie admitted that the green light for importing 5008 had only been given after more than 12 months of internal debate.
“The French are pretty keen for us to take it,” told motoring.com.au at this week’s 208 mini-car launch. “We can bring it in and be cost effective, we are not going to put it on national TV every night of the week.”
However it is advertised the 5008, which has been on sale in Europe since 2009, won’t be pitched as a people-mover, even though it is based on the C4 Picasso of Peugeot’s PSA sibling Citroen.
“The 5008 is a seven-seat wagon not a people-mover,” Mr Gillespie declared. “If you look at traditional people-movers they are all 5.0 metres long and they are much bigger. We are planning to position the car as a seven-seat wagon.
“It is a Honda Odyssey sort-of approach.”
Mr Gillespie said PAA was still two months away from making a “final, final decision” on which engine to bring in. It is offered in Europe with a 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated and turbo (THP) petrol engines, as well as 1.6 and 2.0-litre turbodiesels
It’s the THP Mr Gillespie appears to be favouring, perhaps as a way of reinforcing his ‘it’s a wagon not a people-mover argument’.
“I drove the car I thought it was OK,” he said. “If you put seven adults in it, it might struggle … if you want a seven-seat people-mover then you need to go and buy a Kia Carnival…. The (rear) seats fold flat to the floor so it is really a five-seat wagon until you need that extra seating.”
The 5008 measures up at 4530mm long, 1835mm wide and 1640mm high. It rides on a 2735mm wheelbase.
