Peugeot has announced local specs and prices for its new 4008 compact SUV. The newcomer goes to market in June starting from $28,990 – a $3K premium over Mitsubishi’s ASX, with which the 4008 shares its chassis and drivetrain.
The 4008 comes in two specs, the base Active from $28,990 and the top-shelf Allure from $38,490. Active models will be available with a choice of FWD or AWD and five-speed manual or CVT auto transmissions. AWD adds $2000 to the base price, CVT adds a further $2500.
All Aussie spec 4008s will come with the same 110kW 2.0-litre petrol four found in the ASX. It’s good for 197Nm of torque at 4200rpm. In FWD manual form, Peugeot claims combined cycle fuel consumption readings between 7.7L/100km (181g/km CO2) for the 2WD manual drivetrain and 8.1L/100km (192g/km CO2 ) for the 4WD auto.
Surprisingly for a marque so closely associated with diesel power, Peugeot isn’t offering an oiler with the 4008. National marketing manager Richard Grant told motoring.com.au the rationale for the decision was simple: no auto option to go with it. Mitsubishi offers diesel with the ASX, but it’s six-speed manual only. “Our research suggests that 80 per cent of the 4008s we sell will be automatics. That makes the diesel hard to justify, at least until we can offer an auto with it.” In the meantime, he added, buyers keen on auto diesels can look to the Outlander-based (but Pug-powered) 4007 or the all-French 3008.
On the standard equipment front, the company uses a comprehensive list to show it knows it’s pitching the 4008 into one of the most competitive sectors of the local auto market. The base-spec Active gets 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, LED lights, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, darkened rear privacy glass and a cargo cover.
In the cabin is automatic air conditioning, cruise control, a reversing camera built into the rear view mirror, electrochromatic mirror, a leather trimmed steering wheel, a chilled glove box and a multifunction colour screen for auxiliary functions.
The six-speaker audio has CD, USB, AUX and Bluetooth inputs. There are steering wheel controls for audio, phone, computing and cruise.
Starting at $38,490, the top-spec Allure adds xenon headlights, leather interior, 18-inch alloys, chrome side sills, heating and power adjustment for the front seats, with height adjustment for passenger seat.
As part of its bid to broaden the vehicle’s appeal, Peugeot has kept the 4008 options list simple. There are just two option packs for Active buyers – an 18-inch alloy wheel upgrade plus side chrome door sills for $1000, or those items plus a full leather interior for $3000.
A satellite navigation package that adds a DVD player and shifts the rear camera image from the mirror down to the centre screen is available for $1495.
All 4008s get seven airbags and a full-sized spare wheel.
