Peugeot e-2008 confirmed for Oz

Electric compact SUV due in Aussie showrooms in the third quarter of 2023 in a single high-spec variant, pricing TBC

It’s shaping up to be a busy year for Peugeot Citroen Australia, which has just confirmed another new model for our market – this time the 2023 Peugeot e-2008.

Pricing is yet to be announced for what should be Australia’s sixth mainstream electric compact SUV, following the pioneering MG ZS EV, which continues to set the price benchmark at $44,990 drive-away, and the BYD Atto 3, Hyundai Kia Electric, Kia Niro Electric and Mazda MX-30 Electric.

Small luxury electric SUVs also available include the BMW iX1, Lexus UX 300e, Mercedes-Benz EQA and Volvo C40, XC40 and, soon, EX30.

Larger electric SUVs include the Audi Q8 e-tron, BMW iX and iX3, Mercedes-Benz EQC, Genesis GV60 and GV70 Electric, Jaguar I-PACE, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6, Tesla Model Y and, soon, the Subaru Solterra, Skoda Enyaq, Toyota bZ4X and Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5.

Australia’s cheapest the EV is the new GWM Ora hatch ($44,490 drive-away) and other electric cars include the BMW i4, Mercedes-Benz EQE, Cupra Born, MINI Electric, Nissan LEAF, Polestar 2, Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model 3 and upcoming MG4.

Peugeot Australia says the e-2008 – its second EV after the E-Partner compact electric van, which is due on sale by mid-2023 – will arrive Down Under in the third quarter of this year in a single “highly specified” variant.

That means it’s likely to be the most expensive variant in the Peugeot 2008 range, which currently opens at $38,945 for the Allure and closes at $51,188 for the GT Sport (both plus on-road costs).

“This year, we have set out to accelerate our local electrification journey and the exciting addition of the e-2008 will play an important role in building our electrified offering and ultimately offering more choice for Australian consumers,” said Peugeot Australia managing director Kate Gillis.

“The 2008 has a powerful and distinctive style and now the addition of an electric vehicle variant, this will certainly strengthen the appeal of our small SUV range.”

Underpinned by the Stellantis group’s widely used CMP architecture, local e-2008s will be powered by a 50kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a solitary 100kW/260Nm electric motor with an expected driving range of around 333km.

Those figures will make the zero-emission 2008 the torquiest powertrain available for the small French SUV in our market, if not quite the most powerful; the 2008 GT is good for 114kW/240Nm Sport.

Other new models expected Down Under from the French brand in 2023 include the Peugeot 408 crossover, 308 GT Sport PHEV Hatch and 508 Sportswagon PHEV, which may be delayed and released here as part of the recently facelifted 508 line-up.
