Power boost coming for Nissan X-TRAIL

Popular medium SUV to get new range-topping diesel with next facelift to help it fight off new competition

Nissan has revealed that its X-TRAIL SUV will come with a powerful new diesel option as part of next year's mid-life tweaks.

Helping it go head-to-head with the new Skoda Kodiaq and more powerful versions of the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe, the new X-TRAIL will gain the option of a new 140kW 2.0-litre diesel.

Thought to be combined with a conventional six-speed automatic gearbox instead of the current 96kW 1.6-litre's X-Tronic CVT transmission, the more powerful engine will also come with all-wheel drive as standard.

The 2.0-litre and transmission have not yet been confirmed for Australia but are likely to be offered in combination with the range-topping ST-L, Ti and TL models.

Nissan is expected to reveal more on how it plans to update the X-TRAIL closer to its 2017 launch.
