Puma shoes and the decades-long motorsport connection
With a history in motorsport dating back over 30 years, Puma now supplies footwear and clothing to Formula 1 teams including Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG F1, and Red Bull Racing.Sportswear brand Puma has established a strong presence in the automotive world through collaborations and partnerships with various car brands and motorsport teams.
Puma's journey in motorsports began in 2001 when it became the supplier of footwear and clothing to the Jordan Grand Prix team with the now iconic Puma Speedcat shoe. The Speedcat was an innovative and elegant low-profile driving show that quickly became a fashion classic among racing enthusiasts.
The Speedcat's roots trace back to 1998 when a fireproof version was created specifically for Formula 1 drivers. Since the mid-1980s, they have developed fireproof overalls, race shoes and other high-performance racing gear.
Puma has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the motorsport world too, including Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton. By signing deals with Ferrari (2004), Mercedes-AMG F1 (2012), and Red Bull Racing (2015), Puma has become the top supplier of racing gear and merchandise in Formula 1.
In May 2023, Puma announced a multi-year partnership with F1, that will see Puma produce F1-licensed apparel, footwear, and accessories and exclusively sell F1 and team merchandise at several Grand Prix races. They've even been given the contract to supply the official uniforms to all F1 personnel at circuits from 2024.
Puma's involvement in motorsports extends beyond Formula 1 too with the brand partnering with BMW M Motorsport and Porsche, providing race gear for events such as DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) touring car series, Formula E, IMSA (International Motor Sports Association), Intercontinental GT Challenge, WEC (World Endurance Championship), Porsche Supercup, Porsche Juniors, as well as Team Penske's ventures in NASCAR and IndyCar.
