The Finer Details

As if the Jaguar Type 001 wasn’t already a big enough departure from the norm for JLR, the GT will be the first non-SUV Range Rover ever, swapping the usually traditional boxy silhouette for a Polestar 2-style high-riding sedan look.

Very few details have been confirmed beyond this initial batch of teaser images, but we do know it will be the first JLR product underpinned by the new ‘EMA’ platform that prioritises battery-electric powertrains, but is also accommodating to hybrids.

As it turns out, a hybrid powertrain will be added deeper into the GT’s lifecycle.

While it might look like a lifted sedan, its creators are promising “capabilities no conventional GT can match” when the black top runs out.

“Its blend of effortless EV performance, first-class long-haul refinement and all-terrain capability is pure Range Rover; while its calming interior previews our vision of a modern grand tourer,” Range Rover managing director Martin Limpert said.

The Road Ahead

JLR hasn’t made any specific claims about the GT’s cruising, performance or off-road capabilities besides the above but has promised to announce more later in the year.

The pre-production prototypes are currently undergoing the final phases of development which means we should see the GT stripped of its camouflage by the end of the year and on sale globally next year.

What that means for Australia is less clear right now, but odds are it’ll be in local showrooms by 2028.
