RAM Trucks Australia (also known as American Special Vehicles) has recalled almost 1300 vehicles this week due to efficiency concerns related to its RAM 2500 and RAM 3500 pick-up trucks, with a further 419 examples striking emissions-related software woes.
According to the nationwide product safety recall notice at the federal government’s Vehicle Recalls website, a total of 1294 examples of RAM 2500 and 3500 vehicles built and then ‘remanufactured’ to right-hand drive in Melbourne in 2021-2022 could be missing the diesel particulate matter sensor.
“Due to a manufacturing defect, the diesel particulate matter sensor may not have been installed during assembly. This could increase vehicle emissions and block the diesel particulate filter. If this occurs it can limit the vehicle power and performance leading to engine stalling,” said the recall notice.
Affected owners – click here to see the full VIN list – are being asked to contact their local RAM dealership to arrange to have the particulate installed.
In a separate recall notice this week, RTA recalled one RAM 2500/3500 vehicle built between 2013-2018 for an emissions-related software update.
“Due to a software issue, the engine control software requires updating for efficient engine emission performance” because it “may not be compliant with the ADR 80/03 – Emission Control for Heavy Vehicles,” said the recall notice.
The RAM trucks involved in this pair of recalls are all powered by a 6.7-litre turbo-diesel built by Cummins – the US engine manufacturer that was fined $A2.5 billion earlier this year, when it was found to have fitted VW dieselgate-style emissions ‘defeat devices’ on hundreds of thousands of inline six-cylinder diesel engines.
In a third recall notice involving 419 examples of the very latest 2024 RAM 2500 and 3500, RAM Trucks Australia has noted a software issue in the steering column module of affected vehicles.
RAM says the software malfunction could cause the high-beam headlight switch to activate the turn signal indicators and vice-versa.
“If the turn signal indicators do not illuminate as intended, other road users would be unable to identify if the vehicle is turning. Non-operational high beam headlamps will result in reduced visibility,” sid the recall notice.
A free software update is being offered to owners of affected vehicles, who are encouraged to contact their local RAM dealer.
More than 1000 examples of the latest RAM 2500 and 3500 were also hit with two separate recalls in August last year, due to a fire risk involving their six-speed automatic transmissions and air heater intakes.
