Aston Martin has confirmed the revolutionary AM-RB 001 it is co-developing with Formula 1 race team Red Bull will pave the way for yet another mid-engine supercar.
Sitting below the AM-RB 001, the announcement a second mid-engine supercar is being developed was made by US car blog The Drive, following an interview with Aston Martin's design boss Marek Reichman.
“Everything we do in Special Projects is in part a foretelling of something to come. We never do something and then forget it. One-77 you can see as the start of the styling expression that became DB11. That’s how we get benefit for the brand.
“AM-RB 001 is a precursor of the idea of a mid-engined vehicle being part of the lineup for the Second Century plan. But far out—in the 2020s and beyond,” he told The Drive.
The second supercar is expected to arrive around 2022, claims The Drive.
It's thought the mid-engined supercar is needed to help share the huge costs of development invested in the state-of-the-art hypercar.
Thought to be based on the same carbon-fibre monocoque, the new supercar will also share its all-new 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 hybrid powerplant, but weigh more than the AM-RB 001's 1000kg kerb weight and feature an aero package that's less radical.
The F1-style feet-high driving position may also be sacrificed to widen its appeal to help it rival cars from Lamborghini and Ferrari.
