SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW: Lambo unleashes 50th anniversary Aventador
Anniversary edition V12 coupe scores 15kW power hike, bright yellow paint and aero upgradesLamborghini chalked up its 50th birthday at the Shanghai motor show by whipping the covers off a limited-edition Aventador, resplendent in its canary-yellow paint and fettled bodywork.
The raging bull of Sant’Agata says it will build and sell 100 examples of the Aventador LP 720-4 50° Anniversario, although pricing is yet to be announced.
Mechanical upgrades include revised engine mapping for the 6.5-litre V12, boosting power from the standard car’s 515kW to 530kW, although the claimed performance figures – 0-100km/h in 2.9sec and v-max of 350km/h – are no different to those of the base model.
Befitting its low-volume status, each of the 100 cars is adorned with a badge with a “50°” logo and a serial number.
Keen Lambo spotters will notice the 50° Anniversario model has new front and rear fascias that are claimed to further optimise the Aventador’s aerodynamics.
The front air intakes and the aerodynamic splitter have been enlarged and extended, and small flaps set into the sides. The rear end is completely new and features an enlarged diffuser and expansive meshwork that’s claimed to further improve engine-compartment ventilation.
Lamborghini claims the new body addenda boosts aerodynamic efficiency (ie stability-boosting downforce) by more than 50 per cent without impacting the car’s drag characteristics.
However, what most people are like to pick up on at first glance is the in-your-face ‘Giallo Maggio’ (May yellow) paintwork that references past Lambo icons such as the Miura and has been part of the brand’s colour palette since its founding in May, 1963.
Exclusivity is guaranteed for the Giallo Maggio colour – distinguished by a “particularly intense glitter effect” – as it has been reserved for the limited-edition model.
Contrasting with the bright-yellow paintwork are matte-black lower body sections, offset by stealthy gloss-black wheels.
However, if yellow isn’t your thing, you can order the LP 720-4 50° Anniversario in virtually any shade as part of the Ad Personam individualisation program.
The low-volume Aventador’s interior hasn’t been left untouched, as it’s trimmed in special semi-aniline leather that’s been subjected to a particular tanning and colouring process that “accentuates the full grain, natural look and smoothness of the leather”.
Lamborghini also used the Shanghai show to roll out yet another limited edition of its Gallardo, which has been around since 2003 and could be replaced next year by an all-new successor.
The Gallardo LP 560-2 50° Anniversario is designed to keep the spotlight on the current model for now, gaining features such as the carbonfibre rear wing and transparent engine cover from the Gallardo Superleggera, along with shimmering white Bianco Opalis paintwork.
