Sleek new Haval H6 GT imminent

Coupe-style version of Haval H6 mid-size SUV now locked in for Australian launch in July

The 2022 Haval H6 GT will begin rolling into showrooms from July and is primed to deliver a cut-price alternative to sporty coupe-like SUVs like the Audi Q5 Sportback and BMW X4.

Fitted with a pair of large digital screens in the cabin, a range of advanced autonomous driving systems and high levels of safety equipment, the Haval H6 GT was originally due in Australia in the second quarter of this year, but global supply chain restrictions have delayed its arrival.

Pricing and detailed specifications for the new model haven’t been announced by GWM Haval, but given it’s a larger, sportier and higher-grade model than the regular Haval H6, expect to see the GT extend beyond the H6’s current ceiling of $45,990 drive-away.

The sleek new H6 GT will be the third Haval model in Australia when it joins the Haval Jolion small SUV and the H6 mid-size SUV, following the axing of the Toyota Prado-sized Haval H9.

It’s part of an aggressive product portfolio expansion by parent company GWM that will see two all-new sub-brands launching here this year in the form of Tank off-road SUVs and Ora electric vehicles.

The Haval H6 GT boasts a sleek exterior design and is pitched as a sportier, more lavish version of the H6 with which it shares its platform architecture.

It carries a new-look front-end and a redesigned rear-end with de rigueur sloping tailgate, twin exhaust outlets and a roof wing.

Some of the features already confirmed for the H6 GT include carryover equipment from the H6 SUV wagon, such as a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a 12.3-inch infotainment touch-screen.

GT-embroidered Comfort Tek leather seats are part of the package along with “increased cabin space and a more comfortable experience for passengers, front and rear,” the company says.

Powered by the same turbo-petrol engine (150kW/320Nm) as the regular Haval H6 and driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the H6 GT is offered with high-performance Brembo brakes and sporty tyres in some global markets but it’s not clear if these will be part of the local stable.

A hybrid powertrain is also offered elsewhere and could join the H6 Hybrid wagon in Australia down the track.

The new Haval H6 GT will be backed by a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty along with five years of capped-price servicing and five years’ roadside assist.

GWM Haval says the H6 GT “is expected to be a popular addition by appealing to those who want a sportier SUV experience while maintaining the space and functionality offered by a more traditional SUV”.
