SPY PICS: Hyundai IONIQ 6 caught in the wild
Upcoming electric sedan spotted undergoing real-world testing under heavy camoThe 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 has been spotted testing again, this time revealing an electric sedan shrouded in tightly wrapped camouflage in an effort to try and conceal its identity.
First previewed by the Hyundai Prophecy concept in March 2020 and then snapped from the inside back in July 2021, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 looks to have lost some of the concept car’s more striking proportions in favour of practicality; chief among which is its low roofline.
Whereas the Prophecy concept was a long and low-slung machine, the production version’s proportions appear taller and higher overall, which will no doubt pay dividends when it comes to front and rear headroom.
On the subject of proportions, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 looks to possess a similar overall length to the current Hyundai i30 sedan, albeit with a longer wheelbase and shorter front overhang due to the lack of an internal combustion engine.
Other key features that have been omitted include the suicide rear doors, vertical LED tail-lights and bladed five-spoke alloy wheel design, which has been replaced by far more aero-friendly units.
By contrast, one design element that does look to have made it to production, at least on this particular vehicle, is the generously sized rear spoiler – although even that seems to have been toned down a bit.
While it’s hard to tell for sure, the Porsche-inspired headlights appear to have made the transition from concept to production, unlike the digital wing mirrors which did actually feature in a previous leak. Expect this feature to be reserved for the flagship versions given its inclusion on the inbound Genesis GV60.
Just like its Hyundai IONIQ 5 crossover counterpart, the IONIQ 6 is underpinned by the Hyundai Motor Group’s modular e-GMP architecture.
Like its fastback cousin, the IONIQ sedan will be available with both single-motor rear-drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain configurations, offering up to about 230kW of power and more than 600Nm of torque.
An N Performance version is also tipped to emerge at some stage, offering up supercar-scaring performance as per the Kia EV6 GT, albeit with a more focussed chassis set-up.
