SPY PICS: Mercedes-Benz C-Class, year 2014

While there is not an awful lot to be gleaned from these first pictures of the fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class, there is still something to be seen in the overall shape and proportions of the all-new model, expected in either late 2013 or early 2014.

That, plus the knowledge Benz is clearly already well along the developmental path for the next generation of its volume-selling model.

Attempting to visually strip the development car seen here slithering in arctic conditions indicates there's not a lot of change to the overall proportions of the C-Class.

Realistically, all that can be clearly seen is the more rounded shape of the external rearview mirrors, which may set the stage for the overall styling themes of the next-generation model. Then again, the test mule could be a current-bodied C-Class with new running gear underneath – but why would they work so hard to disguise that?

Otherwise the cladding is so extensive that any attempt to establish the true shapes of the C-Class becomes pure conjecture. It would be hoped Benz designers have instilled some of the essence of the F800 Style Concept.

unveiled at the 2010 Geneva show, but it's hard to see much evidence in this test mule.

The likely drivetrains are also purely conjecture, although it is a certainty the next C-Class will come with hybrid options, with conventional petrol and diesel engines remaining in the model line-up.
