These spy pics – captured by the Carparazzi lensmen – provide an indication of how Mercedes-Benz’s all-new C-Class will shape up.
Pounding around the Nurburgring wearing a heavy disguise that camouflages the key details, this test mule is a precursor to an all-new compact sedan that’s expected to go on sale late next year or in early 2014.
Merc’s existing W204 C-Class has now been around for over five years, and although still a capable vehicle, it’s up against the recently launched BMW F30 3 Series that’s established itself as the benchmark for the segment.
The extensive disguise worn by the C-Class prototype makes it hard to form any real conclusions about the car’s looks, but it’s fair to expect the next-gen model will embody some of the styling elements seen in the likes of the new SL and SLK. Its profile may also have a bit in common with the CLS, although it won’t be as dramatic as the big four-door coupe.
According to sources, the new model will be the first C-Class to be manufactured at Merc’s US plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The key technical highlights are expected to include an eight- or possibly even a nine-speed automatic in lieu of the current 7G-Tronic transmission.
The powertrain line-up is expected to kick off with a turbocharged 1.8-litre engine that will be complemented by V6 units, along with a hybrid and an assortment of diesels. It’s believed the hybrid will pair a four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and gearbox.
Naturally there will be an AMG variant in due course, and this could sport the 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 that powers the SLK 55. In the roadster this unit pumps out 310kW and 540Nm.
A more likely possibility is that the new AMG-tweaked C will score a slightly detuned version of the twin-turbo 5.5-litre V8 that propel the CLS 63 and E63 AMG, punching out 381kW and 700Nm in these applications. Some sources are tipping a power output around the 335kW mark for the new C63 AMG, but it remains pure speculation for now.
As per the new SL, the next-gen C-Class is expected to shed weight via the use of aluminium and some composites in its construction.
Sources suggest the model line-up will also grow via the addition of a new convertible derivative.
