SPY PICS: Porsche 911 R sighted again
Bare-bones 911 resurfaces less than a fortnight out from its worldwide debut in GenevaPorsche's 911 R has been caught out in public once more, with new spy pics revealing what is believed to be the final production form of the car right down to the Porsche legend on the rear valance and the manufacturer's coat of arms badge on the otherwise unadorned bonnet.
Although these new pictures show a different design of alloy wheel – in a more complex array of 10 paired spokes – the 911 R sticks with the centre-locking wheels mentioned in our previous report in November last year. Despite that, the 911 R is reputed to be for road use only, not the track specifically – although there's little doubt some will turn up at amateur track meets most weekends.
Expected to be lighter – with a reduced equipment list and possibly thinner gauge steel for the monocoque shell – the 911 R is anticipated to offer a manual-only transmission to multiply the torque from the 4.0-litre flat six. Power to weight ratio is likely to be on par with the 911 GT3 RS. But with fewer aerodynamic aids and narrower tyres the 911 R should inject some fun back into driving.
The only problem with that is it's speculated the 'fun' will be enjoyed by just 600 cashed-up buyers around the world.
